What will I learn?
All students receive theory and composition lessons comparable to those given in the first two years of college for music majors. This includes functional harmony, counterpoint, sight-singing, ear-training, dictation, and an introduction to contemporary methods such as pan-diatonicism, quartal, and serialism. Additional topics in popular songwriting, blues, jazz and Rock ‘n’ Roll are also taught, and students are encouraged to study other genres they may be interested in. Note: Although hand-written notation will be taught, students will need access to a personal computer and will be required to buy a copy of Print Music®, Allegro®, or Finale® notation software.
Will I be able to create a CD of my music?
Yes. Using the software mentioned above, a good-quality synthesized recording of student works can be created. These cannot take the place of live recordings, but are considered acceptable for college application portfolios and many competitions.
Do I need a music background for these lessons
You will have to have at least basic piano or other instrument skills and some ability to read traditional western European music notation. The lessons will greatly enhance your abilities in these areas.
What about orchestration or arranging?
Some of the basics of orchestration and arranging are a part of the composition curriculum, but usually these subjects are big enough to require separate lessons. I give a 20% discount for combined lessons.
What are the composition classes like?
Composition lessons are 1 hour long, once a week and include workbook lessons along with computer-based learning and examples. Students who can, will be encouraged to perform solo works at my semiannual recitals. Ensemble or electronic music may be on a CD.
How long are your lessons?
Piano, flute and beginning voice lessons are 45-minutes long, once a week and require a one-time deposit for books and materials. Intermediate-advanced voice lessons and all composition lessons are 60-minutes long once a week.
